Montréal, Québec, Canada
At the beginning of July, some friends and I drove up to Montréal to celebrate Canada Day and to generally enjoy the city. The last time I was up there it was February, so I was definitely glad to be exploring the city in shorts instead of winter boots!
One thing I always enjoy about Montreal is the amazing street art hidden around every corner. We used most of our time to explore the old part of town and see a Cirque du Soleil show under the Big Top (we saw Volta, definitely check it out when it travels to a city near you!), but we did manage to catch sight of a few fun murals.
We chose a good weekend to visit because other than the general Canada Day celebrations, it was also Montréal Jazz Fest. This is such a fun festival because you can just walk freely from stage to stage and hear amazing music at each one. My friends were definitely appreciating the rhythms, but my personal favorite spectator was this unique gentleman.
The city was also out to impress visitors who managed to wander past the Jazz Fest area with outdoor art displays around the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal (the Museum of Fine Arts) and all along Rue Sherbrooke, including an interesting ode to pedestrian street signs that threw me for a loop when I first saw them…
All of that walking, dancing, and general exploration gave us quite an appetite, which only means one thing in Montréal: poutine. A friend favorite for this Montréal-must is found at Le Saint Bock, so we made our way up Rue St Denis in search of fries and cheese curds.
After getting our fill of both poutine and craft beer at St Bock, we made our way back to our hotel to get ready for an evening at the circus with Cirque du Soleil. On the way, and all around the city, another favorite Montréal sight for me is all of the beautiful doors. These are just a few, but they have such character!
This was a great weekend full of exploration and entertainment, all spent with wonderful friends! One final must-do for me when visiting Montréal is always to climb up what feels like a million stairs to see the view from the overlook on Mount Royal. Last time I made the climb it was for blue hour and night time shots, but the clouds this trip were just asking for a more dramatic look.
