New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY

The New York Botanical Garden is a truly magical place. A favorite childhood book of mine was called Miss Rumphius, and a key part of that book was how the main character would escape the winter cold by going to a conservatory full of tropical plants. I had my first Miss Rumphius moment when I visited the NYBG for the orchid show years ago with my mom, and when I went back a few weeks ago with my aunt and cousin, I was in for a new treat.

Back in March I was in Seattle and visited the Chihuly Museum, and it was then that I became an instant fan. Fast forward to this summer and I got the best present because there is a brand new Chihuly exhibit at the NYBG! You can go during regular daytime hours, but they also have a nighttime pass. This is a bit of a tricky decision photographically because they don’t allow tripods on the grounds, but being in the big conservatory at night was a chance we all didn’t want to pass up.

(*it was so crowded when we went that lots of people had them anyway… you could probably get away with it*)

One of the main courtyards has this amazing neon explosion, and while we visited there was a musician playing a steel drum. It added such a nice ambiance to the moment.
